Perplexity AI gives you cited, real-time answers instead of a link list. After three months as a daily research tool, here is our verdict.
Perplexity AI has fundamentally changed how I research. Instead of ten browser tabs of contradictory articles, I get a synthesized answer with inline citations I can verify. Three months in, it has largely replaced Google for research queries.
The free tier is genuinely useful: real-time web search, decent response quality, and unlimited queries. Pro ($20/mo) unlocks GPT-4o, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, and Deep Research — worth it for daily research use.
Deep Research is the standout Pro feature. Given a complex research question, it autonomously performs 20-30 targeted searches, synthesizes the findings, and produces a multi-page report with citations. Tasks that used to take an hour now take four minutes.
The limitations are real: Perplexity is excellent for factual research but weak for creative, analytical, or coding tasks. It is also only as good as the web sources it finds — niche topics with poor online coverage produce poor answers.
Our verdict: 8.5/10. Perplexity is an essential tool for any knowledge worker who spends significant time on research. It does not replace Claude or ChatGPT — it complements them.
